| 2009 NJCEA TEACHER OF THE YEAR ROBERT H. YANCEY, SR.
Anyone seeking an example of a hero, the ideal citizen, or a role model needs to look no further than our 2009 NJCEA Teacher of the Year, Robert H. Yancey, Sr. Mr. Yancey has been well known in the Department of Corrections since beginning his career in 1976, first as a social studies teacher and then as vice-principal of Garden State’s Education Department. After retiring in 1993, he has been volunteering by teaching Behavior Modification to DOC inmates at Garden State Correctional Facility.
Mr. Yancey earned both a Bachelor’s and a Mater’s Degree in Education from Glassboro State College (Rowan University) and a Neotarian Degree in Applied Psychology. He holds a New Jersey State Principal’s Certificate, as well as certificates in Criminology, Behavior Modification and Self-Control Techniques, Middle Management/Supervisory Development Training, and Basic Narcotics Identification.
Mr. Yancey served 27 years in the Armed Forces -– 7 in the Navy, followed by 20 in the Army. He retired in 1971 as a veteran of three wars: World War II, Korea, and Vietnam and is the recipient of the Bronze Star w/cluster, Army Commendation w/cluster, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Sharpshooter Badge. Mr. Yancey also received the State of New Jersey Commendation Medal, State of New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal, Burlington County Military Service Medal, and Enlisted Heritage, Airman Leadership School Medal.
Mr. Yancey has also received numerous awards: the Governor’s Certificate for Outstanding Community Achievement of Vietnam Veterans (1979), Governor Whitman’s Outstanding Veterans Award (1996), the Disabled American #3 Veterans Award (1978-1981 and 1991-1993), the VFW Distinguished Service Award (1996), Burlington County College Hall of Fame (1980), Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s “A Salute to African-American Men” (1999), Outstanding Leadership Award, and Distinguished Service to Betterment of Humanity.
Mr. Yancey is the present Commander of Chapter 342 Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and Joint Veterans Alliance of Burlington County, as well as 2nd Vide President, Northeast Chapter, 24th Infantry Regiment Association (Buffalo Soldiers). He is also a member of and has been active in numerous other veterans’, correctional, and education organizations.

Robert Yancey was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He and his late wife raised five children. He has six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
