Statewide Professional Development Initiative 2009-2012 Phase-One Training begins July 2009
The Department of Education has designed a multi-year statewide systemic professional development initiative to support the implementation of the revised 2009 Core Curriculum Content Standards and Secondary Education Transformation and to provide a context for the work of professional learning communities.
The three-phase New Jersey Statewide Systemic Model for Continuous Professional Learning and Growth offers targeted training for teachers and administrators at no-cost beginning in July 2009 and continuing through the 2011-12 academic year. Professional development offerings include a blended model of online learning, 2.0 tools, virtual and face-to-face professional learning communities and value-added onsite training opportunities. Phase-one (2009), Awareness and Familiarization, focuses on students as digital learners, their lifestyles and learning preferences and the urgent need to create learning environments that enable them to achieve the revised standards and meet new graduation requirements in order to be college, career and citizenship ready.
Note that all educators participating in onsite trainings in July or August will receive free flash drives for downloading the new standards and may enter a raffle drawing that offers technological tools as prizes. In addition, information regarding department initiatives that support teachers and supervisors in the development of curriculum aligned to the revised standards will be provided.
Professional development is critical to successful implementation of the 2009 revised standards that include new components, such as, systematic and transparent integration of 21st century themes, skills and technological tools that must be reflected in aligned curriculum and instruction in all content areas.
All educator stakeholders are encouraged to participate in this 21st century systemic professional development initiative. Additional information about the initiative, online registration and session details may be accessed at: http://cie.kean.edu/CIE/21st_century_nj_schools.html.
